MAIN JOB INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ASKED BY RECRUITERS

Whilst interviewers may occasionally throw in a different question, there are certain questions interviewers tend to ask and candidates can anticipate. Interviewers expect candidates to prepare effectively for the most common interview questions.

The main questions will allow candidates to introduce themselves, show evidence of suitability, knowledge about the company, motivations towards the role, reasons for applying and any career aspirations.

Answering a question effectively relies giving credible examples.

STEP 1:  State the example.

State what has happened.

STEP 2:  State why it is important / relevant.

Demonstrate why is this example relevant to the job role.

1) Tell me about yourself (candidate overview)

A question to get candidates started by giving an opportunity to introduce themselves and sell their main credentials. Structure answers to include something on career goals, work experience summary, unique / exceptional achievements and something special about you. Also, include activities and interests because there maybe something in common with the interviewer.

2) Recruiters will ask about why they should recruit you?

Selling achievements, skills, qualities and experience by giving credible examples always interests employers. Think about unique things that are likely to differentiate yourself from the competition.

3) Knowledge about the company - why are you interested in this company?

Demonstrating knowledge about the employer creates a real positive impression. It shows research as well as genuine motivation towards the role and the company. It is an opportunity to shine given that not all candidates do sufficient research to impress. Take something tangible into the interview like a company report or brochure because it shows real evidence of research.

4) What are your main weaknesses? What have you done least well at?

Recruiters are looking for honesty and a credible example(s). Remember to focus on a less important weakness and demonstrate how any difficulties experienced have been overcome.  The objective is to turn a negative situation into a positive outcome.

5) What have you learnt from your current / previous role?

Recruiters are looking for achievements and relevant experience as well as skills and qualities the candidate can bring to the new role.  Delving deeper into a candidates work background - matching  experiences to the job description is key to answering this question effectively.

6) Why are you leaving your current role?

Be positive about motivations for leaving a current role or previous employer. Focus on what the new role will bring in terms of new horizons, a challenge, promotion or the opportunity to learn new skills, etc. Avoid any negativity towards a previous (current) employer.

7) What are your career aspirations?  Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Recruiters are looking for a degree of ambition. Place the role in context and do not be too ambitious. In any new role there is always a certain amount of learning and understanding before progressing further. Suggest laying the foundations for future success and maybe progressing into a more senior role with additional responsibilities. Keep answers realistic and possibly a bit vague.
