Line management can dramatically influence employee careers, so becoming the most important business relationship. Performance reviews, training and development are nearly always conducted through line management so it is crucial to maintain a good working relationship with any boss.
Line management can either help propel or even undermine people's careers.

No matter the personality or capabilities of a line manager, it is important to impress wherever possible. A good line manager will always be proud of helping people to excel in their careers (it reflects well on them as a manager).  Other managers may not be so forthcoming.

Being able to fit in and work effectively with others under pressure will impress line management. Management like employees who are approachable and amenable to helping a team to succeed. Management hate dealing with team issues, so being keen to nurture a good team spirit and
work ethic will always impress.
