Covering letters are massively important. An effective, well-written and professional covering letter adds significant value to any job application. Used positively, a covering letter can reinforce skills, qualities, experience and achievements highlighted in a CV by effectively summarising key elements of any given job application.
Poorly written and over-elaborate covering letters often detract from a candidate
and leave a bad impression. Invariably, candidates fail to get a clear message
across, sell their true potential
nor give a clear indication of what they want or trying to target.
Covering letters should provide a short and simple introduction about viable candidates. Letters must include the basics like what role(s) applied for and where it was advertised. It is also important to address applications to an approriate name and job title of someone at the company. This helps to personalise job applications, whilst demonstrating effective research.
It is important to convey why you are applying for the role, motivations for a particular career and demonstrate key elements about suitability. The covering letter should be concise, interesting and persuade recruiters to read on and find out more about you as a credible candidate.
Covering letters are crucial for speculative applications (jobs not advertised).
Speculative applications will be considered if there are specific benefits available
from employing someone
with particular skills and qualities. This is particularly relevant because up
to 70% of jobs are never advertised. For speculative applications, research is important
to define likely vacancies or areas of the business that could benefit. For larger
companies, target the head of a particular function
as they will know their own recruitment needs, budgets and areas of skills deficiency.
